Examples of issues covered in Presbyterian Action:

  • “What Do Presbyterians Say About Marriage?” Alan Wisdom critiqued a recently published resource on the subject by David Jensen, a professor of “constructive theology” at the PCUSA-affiliated Austin Seminary. Soon to be released is Wisdom’s Mount Nebo paper, “Is Marriage Worth Defending,” an extensive effort to fill in the gap.
  • Christian Iosso and National Council of Churches General Secretary Michael Kinnamon signed the NCC’s “Social Creed for the 21st Century,” which was commended to Obama’s attention. Iosso and Kinnamon, primary authors of this creed, advocated the “20 specific reform measures” in the Social Creed. They mentioned “full employment at a [government-imposed] living wage” with “time and benefits to enable full family life.” They called for “modern forms of usury to be regulated out of existence,” “progressive taxation” to redistribute wealth, and “adequate social welfare” to meet all needs. The IRD/Presbyterian Action published a critique of this NCC Social Creed when it was released last year.
  • Coverage of meetings of the PCUSA Advisory Committee on Social Witness Policy (ACSWP).
  • The General Assembly moderator has announced appointments to three special committees, and it appears he may have done his job well. The three committees created are: The Special Committee to Study Issues of Civil Unions and Christian Marriage, The Special Committee to Prepare a Comprehensive Study Focused on Israel/Palestine, and The Special Committee on Correcting Translation Problems of the Heidelberg Catechism.
  • News on the persecution of Presbyterians and other Christians in Pakistan
